JAKARTA THE FALL OF SUHARTO
This is a selection of work carried out in the city of Jakarta on the island of Java Indonesia in 1998. I went to Jakarta to take photos of this mega city because of the growing statistics hinting at the fact that more people were living in cities than the country side. The migration of people from the countryside to the many cities in the world. was growing. While I was there the people of Jakarta were preparing for their first elections in over 31 years. Indonesia had been ruled by the dictator Muhammad Suharto since his election in 1967. Suharto ousting the then President Kuso Sosrodihardjo better know as President Sukarno in a military coup. Suharto placed Sukarno under house arrest which led to his death also in 1967 mainly due to denial of adequate medical care.
